TALES FROM A TASTING

Whenever I am reviewing a bottle of wine, I do a little research on the winemaker, the grape, and all the other things that contribute to what is swirling around in my glass. With this “secret” wine, I was a little worried I might not be able to tell all of you what is in this secret sauce.

Many websites called it a “rare blend,” or made from unknown red varietals. Geesh, the blend really was a secret! And then I remembered, sometimes you just have to go right to the bottle. There on the back was not only the grape composition (53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Syrah 7% Petit Verdot, 5% Carmenere) but also this awesome little bit about the magic mirror (and where the secret really lies).

What a nice little way to connect the wine buyer to this “secret” blend. But also, it lends me to one of my biggest wine-drinking tips – look at the label both the FRONT and the BACK. Some might not give you too much other than what the Surgeon General thinks about drinking wine. But, some will provide a great little nugget of information about the wine, the vineyard, etc. Whenever I feel a connection to a bottle of wine, it always tastes a bit better!

My other tip is don’t be afraid to consult the internet if you want to know more about what you’re supposed to taste. For example, with this Secret Reserve Red Blend, I would never have thought to smell for truffles – but then, there they were! So, that inspired me to put a little truffle butter on top of the pork chop with which I enjoyed the wine. (And the homemade hot buttered cornbread was pretty awesome too!)
